  • HUMAX enters UK HD Set-Top Box market

    - Provision of HD Set-Top Box which supports 'freesat, first ever free-of-charge satellite broadcast
    - First ever to supply HD product within the industry...commencement of product sales through mega distribution channel
    - Recognition of Humax's technological superiority within the UK market, including BBC

(May 15th, 2008) Humax is entering the HD Set-Top Box market of the United Kingdom, recognized as the center of the European Set-Top Box market.

Global digital consumer products company HUMAX (CEO Byun, Dae gyu, www.humaxdigital.com) announced on the 15th of this month that the company has begun provisions of 'freesat', UK's first ever free-of-charge digital satellite broadcast, to major distribution channels from the beginning of this month.

Although HUMAX possesses the highest market share in the UK for PVR Set-Top Boxes used in ground wave broadcasting, but this is the first time that the company has exported HD Set-Top Boxes to the UK market.

This provision is significant in the sense that HUMAX was selected as a technical partner of BBC from the start of their free-of-charge satellite broadcast service, the first ever in the United Kingdom and had been the first to complete development of a HD project. Particularly, considering that this project takes place in the United Kingdom, which possesses the most advanced digital broadcasting infrastructure coupled with the fact that HUMAX was able to participate under the recommendation of a world-renowned broadcasting company, this provision is considerably significant because it is a demonstration of the faith in HUMAX's technological capabilities.

The product under provision at this time is HD (High Definition) Set-Top Box based on MPEG-2/4, H.264 (brand name: FOXSAT-HD) and will be distributed through various mega retailers, such as the John Lewis Department chains, Dixons, and Comet Electrical Retailers.

Although there are close to 10 million HDTVs owned across all regions of the United Kingdom, a fraction are known to view HD broadcasts. With the start of freesat, HUMAX expects a large increase in demand for HD Set-Top Boxes. HUMAX expects revenues through freesat to be in the range of 30 billion won.

Byun, Dae-Gyu, CEO of HUMAX, has stated that "this provision is the result of the recognition by BBC, an internationally recognized broadcasting company, and the advanced UK market of HUMAX's technological superiority and brand power. As HD broadcasts spreads to all global markets, the HD Set-Top Box market will continue to develop".

At the same time, 'freesat', UK's first ever free-of-charge satellite broadcast service, will begin both SD and HD broadcasts from the start of next month. To relieve the difficulties for viewing ground wave broadcasts and to convert to a digital broadcasting system, BBC and ITV, a private broadcasting company, participated in a joint establishment of freesat. Regions possible for reception under the service is expected to be around 98% and will provide over 80 TV and radio channels, including the current HD broadcasts.
