- Humax
First to Enter Thailand PVR STB Market: November
13, 2006
(November 13, 2006) Humax became the exclusive
PVR set-top box provider for Thailand's only cable
and satellite broadcasting company UBC True for
a contract worth $11 million.
While there have been other companies providing
the popular standard set-top boxes, but Humax is
the first to supply premium-grade PVR set-top boxes.
In a competitive process involving nine well-established
STB providers, Humax was selected as the sole provider.
In the deal with UBC True, Humax will be supplying
both cable PVR STB and satellite STB PVR with built-in
160GB HDD (providing up to 80 hours of continuous
recording) when the product development process
is completed in the second quarter of 2007.
Humax has been providing premium PVR set-top boxes
to markets in Europe - including England and Germany
- Japanese and the U.S. In 2005, PVR products accounted
for 35% of its total revenues.
Founded in 1989, UBC is the only cable and satellite
broadcasting company in Thailand and provides digital
broadcasting service to more than 700,000 households.
Along with the Malaysian company ASTRO, UBC is one
of the two largest broadcasting companies in Southeast
Asia.
- HUMAX
Becomes First to Supply MPEG4-based Terrestrial HD
STB to Italy: May 26, 2006
Recently HUMAX became the first company in the
world to supply MPEG4-based terrestrial HD set-top
boxes (HDCI-2000T) to Italy. A limited number of
STBs is being made available in Italy on a trial
basis during the World Cup through the company's
technical partner Rai, the Italian public terrestrial
broadcaster.
Although the quantity being supplied is not large
at this time, HUMAX is excited about being the first
to supply the set-top boxes in Italy, working with
a significant public broadcasting company as its
technical partner and paving the way for the era
of HD terrestrial broadcasting. HUMAX also expects
a positive rippling effect as more European terrestrial
broadcasters plan their roll out of HD broadcasts.
- Humax Enters
the U.S. TV Market: May 3, 2006
(May 3, 2006) Humax has entered the U.S. TV market
by partnering with DIRECTV Inc., the world's biggest
paid satellite broadcasting company with $23 billion
in sales and 14 million registered subscribers.
Humax
will be providing 20" digital TV sets (LD2060)
with built-in DirecTV reception tuner to selected
electronic stores and distribution markets in the
U.S.
For Humax, the significance of its entry into the
U.S. TV market transcends the basic aspect of supplying
digital TVs: it has taken part in creating a revolutionary
business model.
Digital TV manufacturers generally offer the distributor
market standard television sets with either a built-in
terrestrial broadcasting receiver or free satellite
broadcasting tuner. Thus, to enable specific operator's
broadcast reception, consumers have to purchase
a separate set-top box. With the Humax-DIRECTV business
model, however, the operator-specific tuner is built
in to the LCD TV, doing away with the cumbersome
extra step and expense for subscribers.
Also, because the 20" LCD TV is marketed as
a second unit for the dining room or another room
in the house, Humax does not anticipate the deal
to affect the existing revenue structure for DirecTV
STB, which is designed for the living room. In fact
the company foresees the new TV as a supplementary
revenue stream.
- Humax
Enters the Satellite STB Market in India :
March 27, 2006
(March 27, 2006) Humax is entering the satellite
set-top box market in India. While the company has
provided cable set-top boxes to Hathway in 2003,
this marks the first time it is entering India's
satellite broadcasting market.
With the new supply contract with the satellite
broadcasting company Tata Sky, Humax will begin
providing the locally-produced set-top boxes to
the Indian market in June.
The deal gives Humax a unique opportunity to gain
the necessary brand recognition and a foothold in
the world's third broadcasting market. Thomson was
also chosen as a set-top box provider for Tata Sky,
giving Humax a valuable steady supply base and recognition
as a technology powerhouse and a genuine world-class
brand.
With the start of the contract coinciding with Tata
Sky's first digital satellite broadcasting in June,
Humax foresees growing with the operator and expanding
its presence in India and in other markets in Asia.
- HUMAX
and MEDIASAT entered in a strategic partnership with
EURO1080, Europe's first High Definition Television
(HDTV) Media Company to promote HDTV.
HUMAX, the leading Set-Top-Box manufacturer and MEDIASAT,
important distributor of Humax products, are proud
to announce that the companies entered in a strategic
partnership with EURO1080, Europe's first High Definition
Television (HDTV) Media Company to promote HDTV.

- HUMAX HDTV Set-Top Box, model HDCI-2000 (MPEG4/MPEG2)

Mediasat /Humax will be the "exclusive bundling
partner" and the only one allowed to promote
and sell packages existing of a satellite set-top
box (Mpeg4) and a Euro1080 Conditional Access Card
to distributor and Retail Organisations.
The commercial partner of Mediasat have the right
to show Euro 1080 content in all their points of
sale as well as trade fairs only when the Humax
HDTV-box is clearly promoted as such. It's not allowed
the shops to show Euro 1080 content to promote HDTV
displays or any other HDTV products from brands
that are not "Partners" of Euro1080.

USA SET TO DELIVER LCD TVs WITH BUILT-IN DIRECTV TUNER
[Press Release]
Convenience of a Single Connection Offers
Space-Saving Installation for Viewing DIRECTV®
Service
Las Vegas, NV – January 3,
2006 – HUMAX USA, the “Easy-Digital”
company, today announced that it is developing a line
of LCD TVs that feature integrated DIRECTV Tuners.
The new TVs, a standard-definition, 20-inch model
that will hit the marketplace in the first half of
2006, followed by a 32-inch high-definition model
later in the year, do not require a separate outboard
DIRECTV set-top box tuner. HUMAX plans on distributing
these products through its current retail channel
as well as other DIRECTV-approved retailers.
Targeted primarily at second room installations,
these all-in-one products will allow consumers a
single-cable, space-saving installation for receiving
DIRECTV services. The ultra-thin and elegant design
of the HUMAX LCD TVs with integrated DIRECTV Tuners
make them ideal for placement on a wall, counter
top or entertainment center. In addition to integrating
HUMAX’s high-quality DIRECTV receiver technology,
these sets are equipped with a variety of inputs
and outputs for complete connectivity with today’s
state-of-the-art home entertainment systems.
The 20-inch model is 4:3 and features a modem
and USB port, component video input, two composite
video inputs, and an audio and video output. Available
in the first half of 2006, the 20-inch model has
an anticipated MSRP of $749.
The 32-inch model, which is 16:9, is unlike other
televisions in the market because it is based on
interchangeable modules: HUMAX has opted to separate
the display technologies from the tuner and processing
technologies allowing for development of various
TV modules that can support different tuning features
and options.
The 32-inch model will ship with a DIRECTV MPEG4
TV module consisting of a DIRECTV HD Tuner, ATSC
tuner, component video, composite video, S-video
and HDMI inputs. HUMAX plans on developing additional
modules to support future DIRECTV hardware. The
company expects the 32-inch HD model to be available
in Q4, with pricing to be determined.
“The HUMAX LCD TVs with integrated DIRECTV
Tuners make it possible for a DIRECTV customer to
simply connect a coaxial cable for a true plug-and-play
experience, there is no need for external wiring
or connections associated with an external set-top
box.” said HUMAX USA’s vice president
of business development and strategic marketing,
Tony Goncalves. “And with DIRECTV’s
high-quality digital signal, the picture is second
to none.”
“We are excited to be able to leverage the
strength of our background in the DIRECTV space
– and most recently the flat panel TV space
– to deliver consumers a seamless DIRECTV
experience. Providing consumers with advanced technologies
while simplifying their lives is the foundation
of HUMAX USA – and these latest HUMAX LCD
TVs with integrated DIRECTV Tuners perfectly illustrate
this,” added Goncalves.
“The HUMAX LCD TVs with DIRECTV offers the
complete DIRECTV experience from a single remote
control without interconnecting wires, making it
easy to use and ideal for all areas of the home,”
said Romulo Pontual, executive vice president and
chief technology officer, DIRECTV, Inc., “The
compactness and simple installation of this integrated
TV is the perfect way to bring DIRECTV to areas
like the bedroom or home office where space is at
a premium and a simple connection is highly desirable.”
The HUMAX LCD TVs will be on display at 2006 International
CES at the HUMAX Suite located at the Venetian Hotel
as well as at the DIRECTV booth located within the
main hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

HUMAX
USA POISED TO MANUFACTURE AND SELL NEW PORTABLE
MEDIA PLAYER PLATFORM TO CONTENT PROVIDERS
[Press Release]
Will Design User-Interface Specific to
Each Individual Content Provider’s Requirements
DIRECTV is First Content Partner On Board, Displaying
Product at 2006 ICES
Las Vegas, NV – January 3,
2006 – HUMAX USA, the “Easy-Digital”
company, has developed a new hard drive based hand-held
portable media player (PMP) platform ideal for use
by content and pay TV providers with plans to deliver
content electronically to customers via portable
video devices. The first of such partnerships to
be announced by HUMAX is DIRECTV – for its
upcoming DIRECTV 2Go service.
The HUMAX PMP platform has a 4-inch widescreen
LCD display screen with navigation controlled via
an easy-to-use 5-button design. Additional consumer
conveniences include a high capacity hard drive
(capacity to be partner specified) and a long-lasting,
user-replaceable battery that provides up to 4 hours
of video and 10 hours of music.
Based on an AMD Alchemy™ Au1200™ processor,
the device natively supports many video formats
including MPEG1/2/4, DivX, WMV9 with WMDRM10 support
– all at full D1 resolution (720x480). Moreover,
the integration of a DDR1/DDR2 memory interface,
USB2.0 High Speed Host & Device with On-the-Go,
and on-chip AES cryptographic support, provide enabling
technology for strenuous media applications and
content protection schemes.
According to HUMAX USA’s vice president of
business development and strategic marketing, Tony
Goncalves, the HUMAX PMP platform will provide consumers
a simplified user-experience with greater entertainment
value than is currently available from similar-type
products today. The extensive CODEC and connectivity
support will allow the HUMAX device to directly
connect to digital video recorders, allowing transfer
of video content without the need to trans-code
the file through a personal computer, greatly reducing
the amount of time required to download and playback
fresh video content.
HUMAX is seeking appropriate content partners to
design, manufacturer and even market the hand-held
PMP devices for. “With the company’s
established background in product manufacturing
and marketing within the operator markets on a global
level, we are in perfect position to enable the
many content providers and operator’s poised
to deliver exciting new portable video services.
We are prepared to either OEM this device to partners,
or let them take advantage of the established logistics,
distribution and customer support that we have successfully
implemented here in the US,” says Goncalves.
The first content partner for HUMAX in this venture
is DIRECTV. The HUMAX DIRECTV 2Go compliant PMP
device is designed for a direct connection to a
DIRECTV DVR, which will allow the consumer to transfer
DIRECTV content recorded at home - a key benefit
of the HUMAX platform. Additionally the device features
DIRECTV branding throughout the User Interface including
a DIRECTV approved playlist interface similar to
DIRECTV receivers. In this relationship, the PMP
device is HUMAX-branded, and will be sold at numerous
retail and internet retail outlets. The device is
scheduled for release later this year and in line
with DIRECTV’s launch of this new service.
In additional to DIRECTV content device will support
music (MP3 and WMA) as well as photos and other
non DIRECTV videos.
“The HUMAX PMP will allow our customers to
take their DIRECTV and experience it when, where
and how they want it,” said Romulo Pontual,
executive vice president and chief technology officer,
DIRECTV, Inc. “The HUMAX PMP device and DIRECTV
2Go will be a seamless experience for our customers
because it uses the same easy-to-navigate DIRECTV
user guide they use and see on their Television
at home.”
“Regardless of OEM or co-branded approach,
HUMAX is prepared to support the development of
the specific look and feel of the partner’s
user-interface, allowing them to both extend their
brand and be in control of the consumer interactivity
with their content and services – which is
exactly what HUMAX set out to do with DIRECTV’s
2Go product. We feel that customizing a proprietary
UI will expedite early adoption of existing customers,
build brand equity and also promote the content
provider’s existing in-home content service
to potential new customers,” furthered Goncalves.
The DIRECTV 2Go PMP will be on display at 2006
International CES at the HUMAX Suite located at
the Venetian Hotel; the DIRECTV and AMD booths located
within the main hall of the Las Vegas Convention
Center.

their specific needs with HUMAX USA can reach HUMAX
USA’s vice president of business development
and strategic marketing, Tony Goncalves, at the
company’s Fort Lee, New Jersey Sales and Marketing
