  • HUMAX Co. Ltd Enters US Consumer Electronics Market With Digital Flat Panel TVs and Digital Video Recorders [Press Release]

Announces Plans of Humax USA Launch at 2004 Consumer Electronics Show

November 20, 2003 - Korean-based Humax Co. Ltd today announced plans for its US debut at the upcoming 2004 Consumer Electronics Show, to be held in Las Vegas, NV, from January 8-11. At the show, executives will share the company's US marketing strategy with members of the press, sales representatives and retailers, and unveil their 2004 line-up of flat panel televisions and digital video recorders.

Founded in 1989, Humax is recognized as one of the top three leading manufacturers of satellite set-top boxes worldwide. Currently conducting business in over ninety countries, Humax's strong strategic alliances with leading operators, major consumer electronics companies and technology partners internationally will help facilitate its entry into the competitive US consumer electronics market.

The company's marketing and distribution efforts are being led by Sales and Marketing Vice President Tony Goncalves, who previously successfully managed various product lines and business development affairs for Samsung and Sharp Electronics. "I'm excited about this opportunity for Humax," says Goncalves.
"We are starting from a clean slate in this venture, allowing us to employ our R&D and marketing experiences and create products that consumers want to use and that retailers want to sell."

Humax also announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with TiVo to manufacture DVR products in 2004. The companies will discuss this venture in January at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Goncalves added, "The DVR market segment is prime for explosive growth these next few years. The hard disk drive in CE products is here to stay, as is consumer's desire to manage content. The market is wide open for a new manufacturer that can drive innovation and cost. Humax's dominant position in the set-top box industry will allow for such innovation. And we are looking forward to delivering DVRs that carry the powerful TiVo brand in 2004, as they clearly are the leader in driving DVR sales at retail."

The initial launch of the Humax product line will be through independent, higher-end retailers. Two-step distributors will be brought on to serve smaller independent home installation retailers.

Humax's US effort is part of a larger, global company effort. Each of the company's six worldwide subsidiaries will be announcing plans to enter their respective consumer electronics markets with niche, innovation driven CE products. This initiative will drive Humax to become a $1 billion company, with an anticipated 45% of revenue coming from these new businesses by 2006.

Dr. Dae Gyu Byun, CEO & President of Humax says, "Humax, in short, aims to become a Digital Home Multimedia Product Provider of reliable products that allow consumers to enjoy a wealth of content at home. Humax will continuously release more advanced products that will combine various set-top box functions, storage, and networking ability. Humax is confident it will stand as a competitive Global CE Brand with $1 billion in revenues worldwide by year 2006."

    >> Press Release from AEPOC

AEPOC announces next steps in the fight against electronic piracy
    - 1st AEPOC European Anti-Piracy Symposium to be held October 2nd in Vicenza (Italy)
    - AEPOC Board of Directors welcomes European Parliament's declaration
    - Four new members extend the association's reach

Lisbon, June 13th 2003 - At the Board of Directors Meeting and Ordinary General Assembly of AEPOC held in Lisbon, June 5th 2003, the leading European players in digital television and services have defined the next steps in the fight against the pirating of Pay-TV and encrypted services in Europe. AEPOC (European Association for the Protection of Encrypted Works and Services) represents 29 service providers and vendors throughout Europe and beyond.

At the meeting in Lisbon, Jean Grenier, President of AEPOC, announced that AEPOC will organize the 1st AEPOC European Anti-Piracy Symposium. The event for industry professionals as well as representatives of law enforcement agencies and the press in Europe will present experts views on all aspects of electronic piracy. At the occasion of the Italian presidency of the European Union the symposium will be held October 2nd in Vicenza, Italy, with in the framework of the 10th SAT Expo (www.satexpo.it), one of Europe's top events on advanced telecommunications.

AEPOC welcomed the Declaration on the Fight against Piracy and Counterfeiting in the Enlarged EU which was adopted by the European Parliament on June 5th 2003 by 321 signatories.
    =EN&YEAR_VAL=2003
) The written declaration calls on the Council and the Commission to ensure strong, harmonised civil sanctions for any intellectual property infringement and tough criminal penalties for commercial scale counterfeiting, to promote better cross border co-operation between law enforcement authorities in the Member States in addition to strengthening the role of Europol in combating counterfeiting and piracy as well as to raise consumer awareness that piracy and counterfeiting are not victimless crimes.

In the same spirit, the E.U. Commission has identified in its recently released report on electronic piracy (COM(2003)198) cross-border co-operation between the police, the judiciary and professionals as being a key factor to combat electronic piracy effectively. To foster the development of cross-border networks of enforcement agencies and professionals AEPOC has proposed AECATII (AEPOC European Conditional Access Training and Information Initiative), a pan-European, multimedia-based training and information system under the AGIS programme of the E.U.. The decision on the support of this initiative by the Commission is expected by the end of July 2003.

Said Jean Grenier, "After the release of the E.U. Commission's report on electronic piracy and the very recent declaration of the European Parliament a new stage in the fight against digital piracy has begun. Our tight schedule for the next months shows our continued commitment to this important task as well as our commitment to a fruitful European-wide private-public co-operation."

Also, during the Lisbon meeting the admission of new members active in the fields of Pay-TV, electronic pay-services and hardware was approved: TVCabo (www. tvcabo.pt), Digiturk (www.digiturk.gen.tr), Viasat Broadcasting (www.viasat.co.uk) and Humax (www.humaxdigital.com). In addition, SkyItalia, the entity resulting from the merger of Stream and Tele+, was accepted as a full member of AEPOC. This brings the membership of AEPOC to a total of 29 companies further adding weight to AEPOC in its efforts to fight electronic piracy in Europe.

The next AEPOC meeting will take place in Vicenza, Italy on October 2nd, 2003.

AEPOC (www.aepoc.org) is the "Association Europeenne pour la Protection des Oeuvres et Services Cryptes" or the "European Association for the Protection of Encrypted Works and Services". AEPOC started its activities in 1995. Its current membership consists of 28 leading digital television and telecommunication companies including TV channels, conditional access providers, providers of transmission infrastructures and manufacturers of related hardware.
